Put out an APB on some Comments Please!

Mon Nov 20, 2006, 3:20 AM
=melonhead118 Has feelings too!

To go alongside *melonhead-emotion's journal here, I'd just like to point out the importance of a few comments now and again.

Every time I log in to this account, i'm greeted with a somewhat bulging message centre, and every time I click that link up there, i'm filled with the vein hope that maybe someone has left me a comment. But lo and behold, there are a couple of hundred journals, and a couple of hundred more faves!

Now, i'm not bothered about the amount of journals, I'm the one who watched you in the first place. Besides, they give me something to waste my mornings with. In one respect, i'm also not that bothered about the amount of faves, it is quite flattering, and I'd be fairly arrogant if I didn't find them that way. In another respect however, you have to wonder, with that amount of faves, you'd think someone would have something to say about my work. They faved it after all right?!

My choice of artwork, whilst being eclectic, is still part of probably the most popular forms of artwork on the site as far as creation is concerned. But its not like i'm trying to beat any competition, I'm just trying to gain a better understanding of my skills, and better them. To be honest, this would be a lot easier if people made use of critique in comments.

First of all, the artist is never anything short of helped by any critique they receive. You should not be afraid of giving an artist critique. If they cannot take onboard any opinion besides their own, then their social skills are somewhat deplorable.

Secondly, when you take a closer look at a piece of artwork to really see all those tiny details, the critique will write itself! You will form your own opinions of an artwork, and the process is not made into a chore like some artists here feel it is.

Secondly, or thirdly for those keeping track, this skill is not just limited to this website. It can be used in real life to form reasoned and solid arguments for situations in which your opinion matters.

So seriously people, taking a little time to add some helpful words to a piece of artwork isn't really that bad! If anything, it'll keep me from assuming you're just faving it to decorate your page with great artwork!

Save Camden!

Save Camden Market!!

Here we are again, i'm sure many of you have seen it before - a local council sees something people enjoy, and so they decide they should "modernise" it to make it "better".

Camden council are scheduled to hear a planning application to rennovate the Camden Market arches. The plans will leave the arches and market simply unrecognisable, and will take away all their magic and charm. It is these things that Londoners and tourists worldwide flock to Camden to see... no, its not a sight, its an experience!

Nowhere else have I seen so much cultural diversity, be it clothing, music food, or simply just the people. This place needs to stay as it is.

I have only been to Camden once, and this is how I feel about the plans. This is how big a place the market holds in my heart, so I urge you...

End of an Era

Yes, I am infact still alive!

__

Basically, I'll submit crap here when I do crap that is worthy of going here. My main interests lie in emoticons now however. I have an emoticon account at

*melonhead-emotion

I have found my niche in deviantART. Emoticons are something I am genuinely good at, and am recognised for doing. I have met people and made so many great friends through my skills as an emoticonist. I have also found a very close personal friend in =brokenboulevard.

My miscellaneous digital art shall live on here however, none of it is going to be taken down. I will still reply to comments etc here, but i'm going to be 99% more active at *melonhead-emotion

I also have started an emoticon club with =brokenboulevard.

*emotiverse

Drop into the chatroom, i'm quite often there.

The part with the message!

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.
